Overview of Toyota Etios
Toyota India unvieled its all new small car Etios and Etios Sedan concept at the Auto Expo 2010. In addition to India, the Toyota Etios (the name means 'the origin of') hatchback will also be sold in Russia, South America and perhaps other emerging markets. With Honda also set to unveil its new small hatchback for the Indian market during the Expo, the two Japanese biggies will be facing off in a big way and for the first time, the two will be up against each other in the small car market.
Expected Launch date of Etios and Etios Sedan
The Etios sedan will be the first to get launched in India, it is expected to be launched by November or December 2010, while the hatchback will be ready for Indian roads by early 2011 and is expected to be launched by March or April 2011.
Expected Price of Toyota Etios and Toyota Etios Sedan
Toyota India has not made any official announcement regarding the prices of Toyota Etios but here are speculative prices of Toyota Etios.
- Toyota Etios 1.2 ---------- Rs. 5,50,000.00
- Toyota Etios Sedan 1.2 - Rs. 6,00,000.00
- Toyota Etios 1.5 ---------- Rs. 7,00,000.00
- Toyota Etios Sedan 1.5 - Rs. 7,50,000.00
Design, Styling & Interiors of Toyota Etios
On the outside, the Etios has sharp styling cues with a big smiling grille that has been high-mounted especially for India. The car has a strong shoulder line with an upward cut along the bottom of the door. The sporty body kit installed on the hatchback version of Etios will not be available as a standard feature, it is expected that it will be offered as a option to the prospective buyers. The Hatchback version of Etios looks much more proportioned and well balanced in comparison to bland looking sedan variant. Both the variants of Etios features six spoke alloy wheels, Body coloured outside rear side view mirrors and door handles.
Interiors on the Etios are quite contemporary and the Etios sports a centrally mounted instrument panel with offset AC vents. Etios offers more space on the inside with roomy interiors as compared to its direct competition, the Swift. The instrument panel, including speedo and trip, is placed at the middle of the dashboard while the AC vents are in round shape. The three spoke steering wheel comes in dual tone along with the rest of the interior. Toyota Etios has modern interiors which look attractive and decent.
Comfort & Safety Features of Toyota Etios
Toyota Etios is expected to offer all the features like we have seen in other B+ segemnt cars which includes Power steering, Power windows, Remote central locking, Dash integrated music system, Steeing mounted audio controls, Automatic climate control system, Rear defogger, Rear wiper/washer, Steering adjustment and various other features offering maximum comfort to the passengers. Etios will also feature a full touchscreen music system which will be a MP3, DVD and FM system with factory fitted 4 speakers. The high end models of Etios will also feature ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and Dual SRS Airbags.
Engine Options in Toyota Etios
Toyota has squeezed out costs of manufacturing Etios wherever possible to make it price-competitive in India and has made it stand at par with Maruti Swift. Etios will be come with two engine options - a 1.2 litre petrol which is expected to generate maximum power of 80 Bhp to meet small car regulation norms to save on excise duty. The second engine option will be a 1.5 litre petrol engine which is expected to generate 100 Bhp of maximum power. Plans for diesel motor are on hold and the buyers will only have the choice of petrol engines initially.
Variants of Toyota Etios
- Toyota Etios 1.2
- Toyota Etios Sedan 1.2
- Toyota Etios 1.5
- Toyota Etios Sedan 1.5
Production and Localisation of Toyota Etios
Toyota will manufacture about 70,000 units of the Etios per annum, to begin with, and will aim for a 10% market share in the Indian small cars segment by end-2010. Up to 70% of the India-spec Etios components will be locally sourced, which will allow Toyota to price the car competitively. The Toyota Etios will compete with the likes of Maruti’s swift along with other premium hatchback cars in India like Fiat’s Punto, Hyundai’s i20 and Skoda Fabia. As per a report by leading auto magazine Autocar India Toyota’s small car concept, Etios is expected to be 90 percent true to the production version that will go on sale in end-2010. Toyota wants a gradual ramp-up in production to ensure that there is no compromise on its quality and hence wants the hatch, which will sell in larger volumes, to come later. India will be the lead plant in the world for the Etios followed by Brazil, thereby further consolidating India as a global hub for small cars.
